Carefully designed to depict the Buddhist path to enlightenment, this Oil Varnished Buddha Mandala Thangka is a magnificent depiction of the sacred cosmos. Shakyamuni is seated in the middle of the mandala, surrounded by several layers of intricately structured and symbolic designs. With its four imposing gates, the square palace building represents the passage from the material world to the divine world of enlightenment. Guardian deities and furious figures watch each gate, acting as guards against ignorance and impediments to spiritual development. The artwork is hand-painted with acrylic colors and 24K gold embellishments, which enhance the sacred energy emanating from the mandala.
Each of the bodhisattvas, protector deities, and other heavenly beings depicted in the Thangka's outer regions has a vital significance in Buddhist cosmology. At the top of the thangka Avalokiteshvara, is encircled by attendant figures that stand for heavenly wisdom and compassion. The fierce protector deities in the lowest half act as strong guards, guaranteeing the mandala's cleanliness. The varnished oil finish gives the painting a rich, aged texture, enhancing its depth and vibrancy.
