What is a Thangka painting?

The Tibetan word Thangka means an unfolding painting, where the word Thang stands for an unfolding scroll and Ka means a painting. Thangka paintings, as a whole, are a visual representation of Buddhist deities, scenes, or mandalas, painted on silk or cotton canvas. 

Thangka Paintings follow a generic principle of composition, design, and iconography. It is made following tradition and guidelines while leaving spaces for personal creativity and expression. Green Tara - Goddess of Compassion

Green Tara personifies compassion at its most gentle and heartfelt. She sits on a lotus that arose out of the lake of tears shed by the Buddha of Compassion, Avalokiteshvara. He stands quietly in his compassion, but Tara is compassion in action: she extends her foot down to the lotus below, ready to stand at a moment’s notice to begin her work. Her right hand rests on her knee, open in the mudra of supreme giving. Her left hand forms the mudra of protection and fearlessness.
