Original Hand painted Wheel of Life Thangka
Size: 19x15 inches/48x38 cms

According to the ancient texts, the original model for the Wheel of life was painted over the gateway of the Veluvana Bihara at Rajagriha on the instructions of the Buddha himself, who indicated exactly how the work should be done. The Buddha was inspired by the activities of one of his chief disciples, Maudgalyayana. Thanks to his mastery of psychic powers, Maudgalyayana was able to visit all beings in the different realms of existence, and to see them in different states of pain or pleasure; as a result, he became aware of the causes of these different states. The Buddha realized that there were not enough people like Maudgalyayana to teach all those who needed to hear his teaching. He, therefore, instructed his disciples to paint the Wheel of Life, a depiction of the different realms of existence, and their underlying processes, at the entrance to every monastery. The picture is not strictly a literal account of worldly existence but is effective in that it appeals to our imagination with its rich and powerful imagery.

OIL VARNISH

Varnish is a final layer applied to a painting after it is finished and completely dry.
It’s used on paintings that are not going to be framed under glass to protect them from dirt, dust, and pollution in the environment.
Varnish also homogenizes (evens out) the final appearance of a painting, making it all equally glossy or matte.

Benefits of Oil Varnish

Varnishing oil paintings in the right way helps protect and ensure the aesthetics of these pieces of art.
More specifically, varnish keeps your artwork away from dust and dirt.
It likewise evens out its final look, making it matt, gloss, or satin.
Over time, dust and dirt will not stick to the painting but the varnish.

Handling And Hanging

It’s best to avoid leaning varnished paintings together, as they may stick.
If you use bubble wrap around your varnished painting or pick it up with your fingers touching the varnish, impressions may show in the varnish.
Avoid hanging pictures in bathrooms or kitchens, or above radiators or open fires, as they will get dirty very quickly.

I visited the premises in Boudha in person. Its not just next to the stupa like many shops but a little way away and easy to find with Googlemaps - just ask locals when you get there as they didn't have an obvious sign, at least when I visited. They have modern studios, workshops and a salesroom all in the same buildng. Bipin was very helpful and I examined several bhavacakra thankas before settling for a beautifully detailed one. The brocade was added in a day or two and the final thanka was delivered to my hotel very carefully and robustly packaged. I was very happy with the thankas I bought and very happy with the service, Definitely recommended!
