What is a Thangka painting?
The Tibetan word Thangka means an unfolding painting, where the word Thang stands for an unfolding scroll and Ka means a painting. Thangka paintings, as a whole, are a visual representation of Buddhist deities, scenes, or mandalas, painted on silk or cotton canvas.
Thangka Paintings follow a generic principle of composition, design, and iconography. It is made following tradition and guidelines while leaving spaces for personal creativity and expression. In Buddhist culture, Thangka Paintings hold high religious values. In a way, it is also a tool that facilitates the realization of one's true nature or the nature of reality
In Ritual Thangka, we provide a collection of a variety of Thangka paintings. Every one of our paintings has been hand-picked by our curators. We take great care in scrutinizing all aspects, from the quality of the thangka cloth to its composition, so that you get only the finest quality paintings
Hevajra is also one of the popular Yidam deities of Nepalese Buddhism belonging to the Highest Yoga Tantra. In Hevajra Tantra, Hevajra is defined thus:
Hevajra symbolizes Great compassion and Vajra symbolizes Wisdom (prajna). Within the composite name of Hevajra, the essence of wisdom and compassion is contained in its entirety. In the Hevajra Tantra his form is described thus:
Hevajra is dark blue with a radiant aura. Hevajra has red eyes and yellow hair coiled and knotted at the top of his head. He is adorned with Pancamudra i.e. the circlet, the earrings, the necklace, the wrist, bracelets, and the girdle. These five ornaments symbolize the purified aspects of the five delusions. He appears wrathful and wears tiger skin. He holds a skull in his left hand and a khatvanga rests in the crook of his left shoulder. He holds a black vajra in his right hand. He originates from the seed syllable Hum.
In his four arms form, he holds a human skull filled with the blood of the devas and asuras with his left hand and a vajra in his right hand. His remaining two hands embrace his consort Vajravarahi.
OIL VARNISH
Varnish is a final layer applied to a painting after it is finished and completely dry.
It’s used on paintings that are not going to be framed under glass to protect them from dirt, dust, and pollution in the environment.
Varnish also homogenizes (evens out) the final appearance of a painting, making it all equally glossy or matte.
Benefits of Oil Varnish
Varnishing oil paintings in the right way helps protect and ensure the aesthetics of these pieces of art.
More specifically, varnish keeps your artwork away from dust and dirt.
It likewise evens out its final look, making it matt, gloss, or satin.
Over time, dust and dirt will not stick to the painting but the varnish.
Handling And Hanging
It’s best to avoid leaning varnished paintings together, as they may stick.
If you use bubble wrap around your varnished painting, or pick it up with your fingers touching the varnish, impressions may show in the varnish.
Avoid hanging pictures in bathrooms or kitchens, or above radiators or open fires, as they will get dirty very quickly.
In his six-armed form, he has three faces red, blue and white. His six arms symbolize the six perfections. He holds a vajra and a knife with his two right hands and a trident and a bell in his two left hands. The remaining two hands embrace his consort Vajrasrinkhala holding a karri and a kapala. He tramples a corpse which represents the three realms.
